How to Do Photography

photography tips

tips for taking photos

Test your camera lighting: The best way to learn how your camera settings work is to fool around with them a little bit. If it helps, write them down on a piece of paper and make a little note about what each setting did and how it affected your camera in both low and high lighting. Try different lighting settings in every lighting situation so you can train yourself to adjust the camera lighting as necessary.

Don't over think a shot: This is especially true when dealing with nature photography, because the more you think the less time you will have to react and be able to take the photo that you're looking for. The best way to first learn photography is to do so by feel and not in the technical thought-out manner. The reason for this is that it is unlikely that you are very own perspective will shine through if you do things this way. We each have our own perspectives and this helps to bring them about and help our creativity flourish.

Read your camera's manual: While you may want to go out there and start taking pictures immediately as I did, it's important to first read the manual and test all your settings. This will get you familiar at the camera and also help you to develop a comfort level in dealing with variations in the ways in which the camera takes a photo.

Find a stable grip to hold the camera: An important part of taking good photographs starts with holding the camera in such a way that it remained stable. Each person will hold a camera differently, so experiment and pick the right holding position for you. I like to hold as much of the cameras possible without interfering with the lines.

Use balance and angles to create the shot your looking for: If you have bad balance like I do it's important to make sure that your body is angled in such a way that it provides the maximum on the stability. Understanding your balance the amount of spacing needed between your feet will also help you to determine which angles you can comfortably take photos. This also applies to angling the camera which is sometimes necessary to fit in the correct photos is being taken

Examples of Angle Pictures

different photo angles

In this first photo of the city courthouse I am taking it at a slanted angle looking upward. The reason for this is it allows me to take a wider shot while getting a particular view of the building. Leaning backward at an angle gives your camera the effect of someone almost looking up from below.

This next photo was taken on the right side of the building while leaning my body slightly to the left. This gives the camera the effect as if you were viewing the building through a passing car. The different angle also puts a different perspective on the lighting and shadows that the building presents.

In this last photo I wanted to give the appearance that a person was looking up at the front of the courthouse through the center of the path. In order to do this I had to zoom in and lean backwards while taking the photo. The reason for this is that if I had simply taken a wide area shot houses and steps would be visible, which is not the focus of the photo. Changing your angle is a way of focusing your medium.

What photo angles do

What angling your body does

Leaning backwards 45: Leaning backwards 45 allows for you to create the illusion photography that you are looking up at your medium. If you take a wide-area shot it will instead look like you are directly facing the building. This will not allow you to focus and will leave out key details of your photo.

Leaning forward 45: When taking a picture something that is directly below you or in front of you leaning forward 45 will allow you to provide a more accurate over-the-top view. This will make your photos appear more realistic and allow you to position how you would like the photo to be represented.

Leaning to the left: Leaning to the left will help to give your photos the effect as if someone was peering at them from behind something or while traveling in a car. This also allows you to get more of a shot than you originally would have if you were standing in one position.

Leaning to the right: Leaning to the right applies the same effects as leaning to the left except that it can also be applied in the proper circumstance to give the effect that someone is coming up on to the thing that you're photographing.

Crouching: Crouching is used to create a sort of linear perspective between you the thing you're trying to photograph. This allows you to change angles very effectively and with that provide many different perspectives on the same photograph. When photographing the ground or a line of trees this works well in creating a realistic photograph. This will also help you to create a wider view of what is you're trying to photograph.

Photographing certain animals can be difficult, epically birds, but I was lucky enough to catch this little guy early in the morning.

Pictures of Animals

Pictures of Storms

Understand the behavior patterns of the animal you are trying to photograph: One of the most important things to know when taking pictures of animals is their behavior patterns. In understanding the animals behavior patterns you'll be able to put yourself in the best possible situation to take your photos. In the case of the moth that you see the picture above I knew that they frequented ragweed so I just needed to wait long enough for the month plan on the ragweed so that I could take a proper picture.

Avoid using your flash: In taking photos of both animals and storms you'll want to avoid using the flash feature on your camera. The reason for this is that using the flash could distort the natural color balance and as a result not give you the truest picture possible. Instead if you need to brighten your image open up the aperture of your camera to allow more of the surrounding light inside.

Turn off all sound to your camera: Most animals have a reaction to sound, so it is important to turn off all sound features of your camera before proceeding to take pictures of animals and their surroundings. The reason for this is for your own safety as you don't want to threaten animal with the sound coming from your camera.

Test settings at different distances: A lot of the time you will not be a to get that close to the animal, so as a result you want to go before hand and test your camera at different distances and angles in the area where you're wishing the photograph. This will prepare you for any amount of distance that you are to put between yourself and the animal you are attempting to photograph.
